It’s interesting to study how the message was communicated to Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) during the period of revelation. According to Ibn Qayyim, there were 7 stages:
- First, there was true vision. The Prophet experienced good dreams that became real.
- He received messages in his heart and mind from the angel without seeing the latter. Allah’s messenger would then say: ”The Noble Spirit revealed to me …”.
- At times, the angel visited the Prophet in the form of a human being and spoke to him. This made him fully understand what he was taught.
- The Prophet often heard like a sound of the ringing of a bell in his ears at the moment of revelation. It caused him to sweat even in cold weather and the camel on which he was seated would kneel down due to the weight exerted.
- There were moments when the angel appeared in its actual form and conveyed the message. It happened twice.
- Allah Himself gave the order for prayer. It was when the Prophet ascended to heaven.
- The words of Allah reached His messenger without an angel as intermediary. There is reference in the Qur’an in Chapter 17(Al Isra).
