Best Methods And Principles For Seeking Islamic Knowledge 1

There are many schools, teachers and books that provide information on Islam .  However,  only one methodology  can take you through the vast ocean of knowledge with the best outcome.

Its rules are derived from the understanding and practice of the companions of the Prophet (ie Sahabahs).  And following them ensures that you get on the right track without deviating from the straight path.

Learn to Please Allah

Seeking knowledge is an act of worship which must be performed with love and sincere submission to Allah.  It must also be according to the teachings of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).

Your journey to learning needs to be solely for the pleasure of Allah.   The following hadith (related by Abu Dawud) is especially relevant:

“He who acquires knowledge which ought to be sought for the pleasure of Allah, the Lord of honour and glory, only to attain something of this world that he desires will not perceive even the fragrance of paradise on the day of judgement.”

As rewards for good deeds depend on intentions, you have to continuously check them.  And it’s essential that the primary goal for studying be to teach yourself before teaching others.

Set Priorities

Obligations relating to the islamic faith, acts of worship, transactions and daily dealings of the Muslim are the first elements to start with.  Once you understand these, you can proceed to the other matters relating to you, your family and subsequently your community like:

  • Following the way of the Prophet (ie Sunnah) to build family life.
  • Help/solve problems of the people around you.
  • Call others to Islam.

As you improve, it’s useful to get other tools to perfect your learning.  One of them is the language of the Quran ie Arabic.

But always remind yourself that whatever you opt for, the same rules and ethics for seeking knowledge will apply.
