Imam

Leader (eg of prayer, of a state).

Iman

Faith, belief.

To submit and offer peace; submit to Allah’s commands according to Prophet’s (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) teachings.

Isnad

Chain of narrators – people who conveyed a hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).

Isra’

Night journey of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) when he was taken from Makkah to Jerusalem.

 Iqamah

Second call to prayer.

Jibril

Angel (Gabriel)

Jihad

Struggle, strive to please Allah.

Jinn

A creation of Allah (from smokeless fire).

Jumuah

Friday.

Kafir

One who rejects the truth; disbeliever; ungrateful.

Khateeb

One who delivers a sermon (especially on Friday).

Kufr

Disbelief.

Masjid

Mosque.

Mi’raj

Ascending of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) into the seven heavens on the night of Isra’.

Mufassir

Scholar who explains/comments on the meanings of the Quran.

Muhaddith

Scholar of the science of hadith.

Muhajirun

Muslims of Makkah who emigrated with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to Madinah.

Mujahid

Someone who performs jihad.

Munafiq

Hypocrite, one who pretends to believe in Islam though he does not.

Mushrik

Polytheist.

Mustahabb

Liked (in respect of good deeds subject to reward but for which there is not punishment if not done).

Nafs

Soul.

Qadr

Destiny, predestination.

Qareen

The jinn assigned to every human being.

Qiblah

Direction for prayer.
