A

Abd

Slave, servant.

Ahlul-Sunnah wa-al-Jama’a

Muslims following the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and the pious generations after him – as a community.

Allahu Akbar

Allah is All-Great.

Allah- t’aala         

Allah – The Most High.

Alim

A person having knowledge and acting upon it.

Aqeedah (Islamic)

Belief based on Quran and Sunnah.

Ar-Riya’

Showing off, trying to please people rather than sincerely intending to please Allah.

Ayah

A sign – A verse of the Quran.

B

Barzakh

Interval – between death and resurrection.

Bid’ah

Innovation, invented matter not derived from Quran and Sunnah.

D

Da’if

Weak (hadith) – weakness in the chain of narrators.

Deen 

Religion (of Islam).

Dhikr                                                    

Remembering Allah eg  reciting names/attributes of Allah, Quran.                                   

Dua                                              

Supplicating to Allah, Prayer.

Eeman                                                 

Faith.

F

Faqih                                                    

Someone with understanding, able to give legal opinions.

Fard                                                     

Obligatory.

Fiqh                                                      

Understanding islamic jurisprudence.

Fitrah                                                    

Human nature.

Hadith                                                 

Sayings and traditions of Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).

Hajj                                                      

Intending to visit Kaaba and perform specific rituals at the specified time– Fifth pillar of Islam.

Halal                                                    

Lawful in Islam.

Haram                                                

Prohibited/Sacred.

Hasan                                                  

Good, also used to describe hadith with reliable chain of narrators.                                        

Hijrah                                                   

Emigrate for the sake of Allah.  Muslim calendar begins from the year of hijrah of Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) from Makkah to Madinah.
